MILK PRODUCTION

The milk production is considered the most useful and the easiest to realize in the rural zones.
The projects are focalized on the improvement of the economical and social conditions of the rural communities where the majority of the inhabitants are women and landless ploughmen, so the milk production is very suitable in the programmes for the income generation.

The activities in this sector offer a lot of advantages:
- regoular daily milk production;
- regoular incomes for the family;
- high demand and easy access to the market;
- ASSEFA organization selling;
- possible integration with other agrarian activities.

To carry on these activities there is a strong organising base structure. In every village there are active specific groups. Women are organized in self-reliance societies. The groups are federated at project level to make easier the activities of gathering the milk and of selling the products.
The principal developed activities are:
credit: some facilitated credits are given to the groups who want to buy milk animals and to contribute for the gathering of milk in a continuative way. In every village there are common funds;
milk production: in every village the women involved in the milk production have organized some milking points and some gathering points. The milk produced in every village is brought to the nearest plant treatment;
transformation and sale: in the transformation plants the milk is pasteurized, homogenized and packed for the sale. The distribution of the milk to the sale points is organized by a structure developed by ASSEFA. This structure has also the aim of selling the other products like ghee (liquid butter), milk and cream.
